P0442 Code: Small EVAP Leak, Checks and Repair Verification
Contents
P0442 reports a small EVAP leak. Preserve the scan results and confirm the vehicle-specific test finding before replacing caps, valves or a canister.
OBD-II P0442 overview. Ford monitoring and Volkswagen Atlas and GM service examples apply only to their documented systems and vehicles.
Do not improvise fuel-vapour pressure tests. Visible fuel leakage or a strong fuel smell requires professional assistance, regardless of the code’s “small leak” wording.
What P0442 means, and how it differs from P0456
P0442 is a small-leak result from evaporative-emissions monitoring. It describes a test outcome, not the location of a failed component.
Ford’s 2024–2025 gasoline OBD summary lists P0442 under its 0.040-inch vacuum-leak check. It separately lists P0455 as a large-leak result and P0456 under a 0.020-inch engine-off test. These are documented monitor categories, not instructions to look for a hole of that diameter on your car.
If your scan shows P0456, use the very-small-leak information for that code. Keep all recorded codes when more than one appears; similar descriptions do not make the results interchangeable.
What to record before arranging a diagnosis
Save the scan report before clearing anything. A useful record includes:
- The exact code, any additional codes and the scanner’s wording.
- The vehicle’s model year, engine and VIN for checking service information.
- Whether the warning first appeared after refuelling or recent work.
- Any fuel smell, visible leakage or change in how the vehicle runs.
Refuelling timing is an observation, not proof that the filler caused the warning. Follow the owner manual for the actual filler design; do not assume that every vehicle has a removable fuel cap. Leave fuel-vapour system testing to a suitably equipped technician.
Two manufacturer examples with different causes
Volkswagen update 23X1 concerns eligible 2018 Atlas vehicles with the 3.6-litre CDVC engine. It describes software that operates the leak-detection pump heater incorrectly, allowing moisture to affect measurements and produce erroneous EVAP codes, including P0442. The document requires campaign eligibility to be checked on the repair date; model year alone is insufficient.
GM bulletin 23-NA-073, revised March 2025, describes dust entering the canister and vent solenoid on listed Silverado and Sierra applications used in extremely dusty conditions. Its coverage is limited by the application table and region, and it explicitly excludes ZW9 cab-and-chassis vehicles.
These examples explain why a code lookup cannot select the repair. Ask whether current manufacturer information applies to your exact vehicle and what test finding supports the proposed work.
Why a cleared light is not repair verification
An EVAP monitor needs suitable conditions to run. Ford’s documented P0442 test, for example, has fuel-level, temperature and operating requirements. A light that is off immediately after clearing the code does not demonstrate that this test has completed successfully.
Ask the workshop to distinguish the repair finding, the verification test and monitor readiness. Keep those results with the original scan. Avoid following a generic driving routine copied from another model; use the procedure specified for the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Is P0442 the same as P0455?
Both concern EVAP monitoring, but they describe different leak-monitor results. Use the exact code for diagnosis.
Can software be relevant?
Yes, for specific documented applications such as the eligible Atlas example. A VIN and current-service-information check is required.
Does “small” mean every driving condition is safe?
No. A code is not a safety assessment of actual fuel leakage, smell or other symptoms.
