Bosch Dishwasher E22: Filter Cleaning and Next Checks

Contents

Bosch E22 points first to a blocked filter. Clean and refit the filter using the instructions for your dishwasher, then investigate a persistent warning rather than assuming a pump needs replacing.

Applies to

Bosch dishwashers displaying E22 or E:22. The references include US and Singapore support guidance; the SHE3AR**** booklet is a North American model-family example. Filter designs and controls vary, so use the manual matching your full E-Nr.

Before you continue

Switch the appliance off before maintenance and follow its power-isolation instructions. Allow hot water and steam to subside. Handle removed parts carefully: trapped debris can be sharp. Stop if safe access requires moving the installed dishwasher or removing enclosure panels.

What does E22 mean?

Bosch identifies a blocked filter as the starting point for E22. Food particles collect in the filter, and a buildup needs to be removed. The Bosch Singapore E22 support page recommends cleaning and reinstalling it.

The warning is a reason to inspect the drainage path, not a diagnosis of a failed motor. Bosch's current US advice also covers restrictions beyond the filter when the problem persists.

Find the matching filter instructions

Check the full E-Nr on the appliance rating plate before choosing a manual. A filter that resembles one in a photograph may still have a different release or locking arrangement.

For example, the SHE3AR**** quick-start booklet describes E:22 on printed page 9 as water remaining in the sump because the filter is blocked or needs cleaning. Its maintenance illustration shows a removable filter assembly and alignment arrows. Apply those details only if they match your dishwasher.

Clean and refit the filter carefully

After the appliance is safely switched off and cool, follow its filter-removal instructions. Bosch's filter-cleaning steps describe the following sequence for the assembly shown there:

  • Move the rack out of the way, release the filter unit and lift it out carefully.
  • Separate the filter components as directed, then rinse them under running water.
  • Use a small soft brush to remove remaining debris. Avoid abrasive cleaning tools that could damage the filter.
  • Reassemble the parts, return the unit to its seat and lock it. On the illustrated design, the two arrows must line up.

Check the locking position before restoring operation. If the assembly will not seat correctly, return to the matching instructions rather than forcing it into place.

The filter is clean, but E22 returns

The US E22 troubleshooting list also includes a blocked drain pump, a loose pump cover, a sharply bent drain hose, and debris in the drain hose or air gap. These are possible checks, not a shopping list for replacement parts.

Look only at safely accessible areas. Opening a pump chamber or disconnecting plumbing requires the correct model procedure; arrange service if it goes beyond the maintenance you can safely perform.

Read the display again if it changes. The separate Bosch E24 drainage checks address that warning; E25 pump-cover checks cover a different code.

Should you reset the dishwasher?

Bosch's US page places a reset after the listed checks if the error remains. Use your model's controls and restart instructions; there is no single button sequence established here for every Bosch dishwasher.

If the warning continues after the appropriate checks and reset, contact Bosch. Keep the E-Nr, FD production number, exact code and a short record of what was cleaned ready for the service conversation.

Reduce food buildup between washes

Scrape food debris from dishes before loading. Bosch's cleaning guidance explains that residue can accumulate around the filter, spray arms and pump.

Use the maintenance interval in your own manual. The SHE3AR**** booklet gives a usage-dependent range of three to twelve filter cleanings a year; that is an example for the covered family, not a universal monthly rule.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new filter when E22 appears?

Bosch starts with cleaning the existing filter. The code alone does not establish that a new filter or drain pump is needed. Ask for model-specific advice if a part is damaged or will not refit correctly.

Does E9240 always mean exactly the same thing?

Bosch Singapore groups E22 and E9240 on one support page. Check the exact display format against your own model documentation before applying that grouping to a different machine.

Can a dishwasher cleaner replace manual filter cleaning?

The cited Bosch filter procedure requires removing, rinsing and refitting the filter assembly. A cleaning product does not perform those physical steps; follow the appliance instructions for any additional cleaning treatment.
