LG Washer CL Code: Find and Release the Control Lock

Contents

LG CL means Child Lock is enabled. Find the marked control on your model to unlock the buttons; switching the washer off may not clear the setting.

Applies to

LG washers with CL Child Lock. Button labels, combinations and hold times differ between models; use the control panel and matching owner manual.

Before you continue

Child Lock does not replace supervision. Never force the door or bypass a door lock to release the controls.

CL is a control setting

LG identifies CL as Child Lock, a setting that prevents accidental changes to the controls. It is not, by itself, a component-failure warning. In LG’s front-load examples, the Power button remains available while other controls are locked.

Read the display carefully before choosing troubleshooting. A photograph can help distinguish CL from a different two-character message.

Find the marked button or button pair

LG’s washer control examples include both single-button and two-button arrangements. Use the markings on your own appliance:

  • Locate the Child Lock or Control Lock label, lock symbol or bracket joining two controls. A secondary function may be printed below a normal wash button.
  • Compare the marking with the control-layout diagram in the matching owner manual. On a combined laundry installation, make sure you are using the washer’s controls.
  • With the washer powered on, hold the specified control or pair for the stated time. LG gives 3–5 seconds for its single-button example; the actual button assignment and operating conditions depend on the model.
  • Release the controls and check that CL disappears and normal cycle selections respond.

If the markings are worn or the panel differs from an online example, use the full model number to find the right diagram. Do not try unrelated button combinations.

Why switching off may not help

LG explains that Child Lock can remain enabled after a cycle and after power-off. Seeing CL again at startup therefore does not establish an electronics fault; the setting needs its release command.

If the correctly identified controls do not respond, LG advises contacting customer support. Have the model number, a panel photograph, the buttons used and the hold time ready. Explain whether CL never cleared or appeared again later. Internal disassembly is not an appropriate way to release this setting.

If the controls unlock but the door stays closed

Control Lock and door locking are separate issues. Follow the model’s door-release instructions without pulling against the latch. If another message remains, record it independently: a dE door warning, for example, needs its own checks rather than another Child Lock attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Will unplugging always remove CL?

No. LG says the Child Lock setting can remain enabled after power is turned off.

Which two buttons unlock every LG washer?

There is no single pair for every model. Check the marked control or the matching manual.

Does CL mean the washer needs a new control board?

The message alone does not establish a fault. It normally identifies an enabled control-lock feature.
